BOURBONNAIS, Ill. — Ten things you need to know as the Bears go into their first off day Tuesday:

1. The Bears’ quarterback play behind Jay Cutler has been a problem. Jimmy Clausen has rarely been sharp and threw another interception Monday on a severely under-thrown deep ball that cornerback Al Louis-Jean undercut for the pick. Meanwhile, my evaluation of rookie Shane Carden hasn’t really changed since I saw him in Senior Bowl practices in January: he’s Rex Grossman without a strong arm. His delivery is long and he hasn’t been very accurate in camp so far.

“Like a lot of other things, we’re a week into it,” head coach John Fox said Monday when asked to evaluate the quarterback play. “So I think they’ll get more opportunity to define themselves. We’re still early in the race.”

Part of the issue is that second year quarterback David Fales still hasn’t practiced because of an extended illness. The Bears are hoping he pushes Clausen a little bit for the backup job, but really, Clausen just needs to start performing better in practice.

2. Cutler, meanwhile, looks sharp. He hasn’t thrown an interception in training camp yet and other than a few overthrows here and there, he’s been pretty accurate. But as I wrote when training camp started, these practices really aren’t the best place to evaluate Cutler. We need to see live game action before we know if he’ll actually limit his mistakes in Adam Gase’s offense.

3. Kevin White is still sidelined with his calf injury. Fox maintains that White is working to get back in shape after not moving around much for six weeks, but it also sounds like the leg is still an issue.

“We’re just not doing a lot with him as far as strong on-grass movement,” Fox said. “I’m not going to get into all of his things but some of it is in water. There’s a lot ways to build your cardio system without pounding on a particular body part. So we’re in that stage and hopefully it continues to grow.”

If White isn’t back by Saturday’s Family Fest at Soldier Field, then it might be time to start worrying.

4. The Bears concluded Monday’s practice with a live tackling period. Consider this the most noticeable wrinkle to Camp Fox and contrast it to Marc Trestman’s insistence on always keeping his players off the ground in practice.

“I think that’s definitely a point of emphasis,” safety Ryan Mundy said when asked about the live tackling. “Particularly for us on defense to help us work on our tackling and get good angles to the ball.”

The Bears will also go through three live tackling periods during Saturday’s Family Fest at Soldier Field. They’ve promoted part of the event as a “live scrimmage.”

5. Despite having a decent season last year, Mundy is in a somewhat surprising position battle with second-year safety Brock Vereen.

“Last year was last year and even though I had a good year, we sucked on defense, so I don’t know if that cancels out or anything. I’m just moving forward,” he said.

Mundy has actually been working behind Vereen for the most part, but new defensive coordinator Vic Fangio seems to be giving a lot of reps to younger players in camp so far to see what they are made of. The safety position is no different.

6. Linebacker Jon Bostic has done a lot more work the last two days. After missing the entire offseason program, Bostic did almost no work in the first three days of practice, but has jumped into team drills lately. He had a pretty decent practice Monday, making one stop in the backfield, while also batting down a pass.

7. Wide receiver Alshon Jeffery was held out of practice Monday after suffering a slight AC joint sprain Sunday. With Jeffery and White both dealing with injuries, guys like Eddie Royal, Marquess Wilson and Marc Mariani are seeing an increased workload at wideout.

8. Cornerback Alan Ball was also held out Monday as he continues to deal with a left foot injury that kept him out of action during much of the offseason program.

“We’ve managed it all offseason,” Fox said. “We’re kind of letting it rest.”

9. Tight end Brian Vogler, a rookie out of Alabama, was carted off the field Monday. Fox said it was a foot injury, but did not know the severity immediately after practice.

10. After five straight practices to start training camp, the Bears will get a day off Tuesday before returning to Olivet Nazarene University for an 11:15 practice on Wednesday. They’ll practice four days in a row before another off day Sunday.
