DT Danny Shelton
Age: 21
Height: 6-2
Weight: 339

College Career: Four-year player and three-year starter at Washington who produced eye-popping pass-rushing statistics (nine sacks) for a nose tackle as a senior. Also had five fumble recoveries and 16.5 TFLs in 2014.

Strengths: A true two-gapping nose tackle who has has a rare ability to get up-field and get after the quarterback. Can play in multiple fronts. Shelton has surprising quickness and agility at the point of attack, often collapsing pockets from the inside. Despite poor speed-testing at the Combine, he shows speed on tape when moving laterally toward the sideline. Competitive nature and non-stop motor is impressive. Deadly club move.

Weaknesses: Bulk of sack numbers came against inferior competition. Weight is probably right on the edge of where teams want it. Needs to watch his hands at the next level because they tend to get high and could be called as “hands-to-face” in NFL.

Bears Outlook: Shelton could be the much-needed anchor in the middle of Vic Fangio’s 3-4 defense. He has the ability to consistently each up two blockers at once or can get up field when asked. That flexibility will cause problems for opposing offensive lines. Shelton is worth the seventh overall pick, but in a perfect world, the Bears could trade back a few spots and still get him while adding more picks.
