LAKE FOREST, Ill. — Shea McClellin just can’t catch a break.

Well, actually he did. A break in his hand.

“It just broke, heard cracking,” McClellin said Saturday, two days after he sustained the injury in practice.

The linebacker has already been ruled out of Monday’s game against the Jets, marking the second straight season McClellin will miss the game following a breakout performance.

“It’s frustrating,” he said. “You got to deal with it and move on. It’s life. Stuff happens.”

Last year, McClellin was named NFC Defensive Player of the Week after a three-sack effort in Green Bay. A few days later in practice, McClellin suffered a hamstring injury and sat out the next two games.

Last week against the 49ers, McClellin was responsible for three quarterback disruptions and played a solid game against the run. Thursday, in practice, he suffered the broken hand.

“It’s very disappointing,” Bears head coach Marc Trestman said. “We’re disappointed for him No. 1 because he has been getting better and we’ve watched him work so hard to learn a new position and get his body the way he’s gotten it to play the position. So we’re hopeful and we know he’ll be out this week and we’ll see where we are next week.”

Hand injuries are typically something you can play through with a cast.

“It’s something we’ll fix and cast up and get after it,” he said Saturday.

But it might not be that simple. When asked if he needs surgery, McClellin said: “I’m not sure. We’ll see. That’s another thing I have to talk to the trainers about.”

With McClellin out Monday, expect Jon Bostic to take over the strong side linebacker spot in base defense in addition to his role in nickel formations.

Ratliff, McManis Also Out

Not only will the Bears be without McClellin Monday, they’ll also be without defensive tackle Jeremiah Ratliff, who did not practice all week after sustaining a concussion against the 49ers. With Ratliff out, the Bears will likely lean on defensive end Lamarr Houston to play inside more, while their two rookie tackles, Will Sutton and Ego Ferguson, will continue to see more playing time.

“I think he’s a big part of what we’re trying to do,” Trestman said specifically about Sutton. “I think he’s getting better, he’s getting reps, he’s active in the games. We’re excited about him and where he is right now. He’s been very mature about his approach and business like. Works hard in practice, has a lot of energy. So we’re feeling good about that and obviously he’s going to be part of this rotation and with Jeremiah out, certainly a greater part of it.”

Cornerback Sherrick McManis is also out with a quad injury, which is a big blow to an already struggling special teams unit.

Jeffery, Marshall On Track To Play

After missing practice Thursday and Friday, wide receiver Brandon Marshall (ankle) was able to put some work in Saturday and it would be very surprising if he doesn’t play Monday.

“We’ll see how sore he is tomorrow and what he’s got to do to get himself ready for the game on Monday night,” Trestman said.

As for Jeffery (hamstring): “Alshon had a full days work yesterday and looked like he’s ready to go,” Trestman said.

Both players are listed as “questionable” on the official injury report.

The Rest Of The Report

Defensive end Trevor Scott (foot) is listed as doubtful after missing all three practices this week. Defensive end Jared Allen (back), safety Chris Conte (safety) and wide receiver Josh Morgan (groin) are all listed as probable.

As expected, center Roberto Garza (ankle) and left guard Matt Slauson (ankle) will miss their second straight game.

On the Jets’ side of things, cornerback Dee Milliner (ankle/quad) is listed as doubtful, while wide receiver Eric Decker (hamstring) is questionable.
